Escape the City: Seoul's Outdoor Libraries are Back!

Looking for the perfect city escape without ever leaving downtown? You’re in luck! Seoul is transforming its main cultural spaces into an urban oasis with the return of the Seoul Outdoor Library. Forget quiet, stuffy rooms; this is an open-air reading experience designed to bring literature, art, and community together under the sky. Best of all, admission is completely free! With immersive reading zones, film screenings, and performance stages across Seoul Plaza, Gwanghwamun Square, and Cheonggyecheon Stream, the event invites you to discover a new way to connect with your favorite stories without spending a single won.

Seoul Plaza
As the main hub and heart of the event, Seoul Plaza is where the largest-scale activities take place, fully utilizing the expansive lawn in front of City Hall. This location is divided into several unique zones, each offering a different way to experience the library.

Performance Zone: This is your stage for culture and entertainment. Watch a live performance, a film screening, or a unique "sky performance" right from the comfort of the lawn.

Reading Zone: Find your own personal sanctuary here. You can lounge on a beanbag and find your reading healing as you dive into a book. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind.

Play Zone: This is where happiness and leisure come together. The Play Zone is designed to be a space for rest, fun, and new knowledge, offering a variety of activities that encourage interaction and discovery.

Pop-up Zone: Discover something new at this unique cultural space. Various platforms and brands come together to create a one-of-a-kind experience that is fresh and unique to Seoul.

Library of the Night: Enjoy the magic of reading after sunset. The Seoul Plaza Night Library allows you to find a good book and read under the stars, adding a special, enchanting touch to your evening.

Gwanghwamun Square
This grand plaza offers a more artistic and dynamic experience, designed for both casual visitors and dedicated readers.

Outdoor Activities: The square is perfect for visual installations. You’ll find specially designed, immersive reading zones that are more interactive or themed. This location also serves as the main venue for film screenings, with large screens set up for movie nights, especially during the evening hours. The long, open space is ideal for a "literary walk," where you can browse books and exhibits as you stroll.

Operating Hours
Weekends (Fri, Sat, Sun): 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Nighttime (Hot Weather/Summer): 4:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Please note that the operating schedule may be adjusted due to weather conditions and other events.

Indoor Space: Gwanghwamun Lounge

A tranquil indoor space located near the square, the Gwanghwamun Lounge offers a quiet sanctuary for deep contemplation. This is a place for a different kind of experience—one that encourages you to slow down and find peace through knowledge and shared information. It's an ideal spot to reflect, study, or simply enjoy a moment of stillness away from the outdoor buzz.

Operating Hours: The lounge is in operation from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. (Closed on public holidays, except for Sundays.)

Cheonggyecheon Stream
The library's presence along the Cheonggyecheon Stream is an intimate, urban experience, operated as the "Reading Clear Stream" model. You can enjoy books and culture in a beautiful, natural setting within the city. It’s an immersive space designed for freedom and intellectual enjoyment.

Outdoor Activities: The event here is integrated into the walking path. You’ll find a selection of approximately 2,000 picture books, new releases, and general education books suitable for all ages. Books are creatively displayed on "animal racks" and in convenient book baskets. The atmosphere is complemented by music that blends the sound of the flowing stream with waltzes, allowing your thoughts to pause, your heart to flow, and inspiration to strike.

Provided Props: To make your experience even more relaxing, the location provides handy props like book baskets and special lighting for the evening. During the evening hours, the books are complemented by LED light installations and other artistic elements that turn the stream into a magical, literary promenade.

Location: Cheonggyecheon (Mojeongyo Bridge - Gwangtonggyo Bridge)
Operating hours: Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 11:00-18:00 During the hottest season, the operation hours will be changed to night hours (16:00 ~ 22:00).

It proves that you can find a moment of peace and intellectual enjoyment right in the heart of a bustling city without spending a thing. Whether you’re a book lover, a family looking for a fun day out, or a traveler seeking an authentic local experience, this incredible event is the perfect way to recharge and savor the simple art of living.
